Tidbits and Rumblings around the College Football Landscape

It’s that time of the week to go around the college football landscape and highlight some of the more interesting storylines taking form on the gridiron. Scarlet Nation returns our weekly feature that takes a look at everything college football.

Week 11 College Football Players of the Week
Offense
QB Caleb Williams (USC)
In a huge victory against rival UCLA, the Trojan QB was superb passing the football, completing 32-of-43 passes for an eye-popping 470 yards and two scores.

Defense
DB Bennett Williams (Oregon)
In a key Pac-12 game against a ranked Utah squad, the Oregon DB sparkled with two interceptions in crucial spots, and added 13 tackles in a 20-17 win over the Utes.

It’s both Thanksgiving week and rivalry week with conference title game spots on the line. It’s probably the single best week of college football’s regular season. The best of the best are:

Mississippi State at #14 Ole Miss – Thursday, 7:00 pm, ESPN
While no division titles are at stake in this one, it could be the fiercest of all the rivalry games. Known as The Egg Bowl, the winner gets the Golden Egg Trophy. This game usually has fights and other drama between teams that annually hate each other.

#21 Tulane at #25 Cincinnati – Friday, Noon, ABC
The winner will be in the lead for the American Conference title game. The loser falls into a tie with UCF for second place and a spot in that big title game.

#24 N.C. State at #14 North Carolina – Friday, 3:30 pm, ABC
Separated by only a few miles, this Tobacco Road rivalry game is one of the best of the weekend.

#3 Michigan at #2 Ohio State – Saturday, Noon, FOX
Simply known as “The Game.” The best game of the best games this weekend, and possibly the season.  The winner goes to the Big Ten Title game and remains in the hunt for a playoff invitation.

Auburn at #8 Alabama – Saturday, 3:30 pm, CBS
The Iron Bowl is always a great rivalry game. Who can forget when Harvey Updyke burned down the famous old trees on the Auburn campus, and confessed to the crime on the Paul Finebaum show. Ironically, Updyke, a former Texas State Trooper, attended Auburn, but grew up an Alabama fan. The game winning pick-six in 2013 was another famous moment in this fierce rivalry.

#12 Oregon at #23 Oregon State – 3:30 pm, ABC
The Platypus Bowl. The Oregon Ducks need a win over its in-state rival to ensure a spot in the Pac-12 title game against USC.

#18 Notre Dame at #7 USC – Saturday, 7:30 pm, ABC
The Trojans need to beat the Irish, then win in the Pac-12 title game to stay in contention for a playoff spot.

Other great rivalry games this weekend
Arizona State at Arizona – Friday, 3:00 pm

Florida at #19 Florida State – Friday, 4:30 pm

Georgia Tech at #1 Georgia – Saturday, Noon

Louisville at Kentucky – Saturday, 3:30 pm

Purdue at Indiana – Saturday. 3:30 pm

Kansas at Kansas State – Saturday, 7:30 pm

Washington at Washington State – Saturday, 10:30 pm

—The first-ever college football game held on Thanksgiving Day was held on November 30, 1876, when Yale defeated Princeton by a whopping 2-0 score. The Turkey Day tilt was played in Hoboken, N.J. The contest was held in chilly, wet conditions, and drew close to 1,000 spectators. Many horses were ticketed for illegal parking.

—LEAD1, an organization that represents all 131 FBS athletics directors, has drafted a letter suggesting FBS football institute a governing body to oversee the Football Bowl Subdivision, which would be led by a chief operating officer. The letter was forwarded to every D1 AD, members of the D1 Transformation Committee, and the D1 Board of Directors

–Saturday’s Iowa vs. Minnesota game was the first time since 1986 that there were no penalties recorded in a game.

—This Saturday will mark only the fourth time Michigan and Ohio State were both undefeated entering “The Game.”  The most recent occurrence was in 2006 with the others taking place in 1973 and 1970.

—This Saturday’s Ohio State- Michigan game is projected to have over 10 million viewers and be the most-watched game of the regular season.

Illinois-Michigan (ABC): 5.5M

Tennessee-South Carolina (ESPN): 4.9M

UGA-Kentucky (CBS): 4.48M

—While working the College Football Gameday show in frigid Montana, it was so cold at the outdoor set that ESPN provided a person to rub Kirk Herbstreit’s feet to keep them warm. No word yet if the lucky production assistant got a bonus while the crowd cheered on.

—Football Scoop reports that Joseph Boletepeli, a former NC State defensive lineman in 2018 and 2019, has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor stalking and threatening head coach Dave Doeren.

—The Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday that charges have been filed against seven Michigan State  football players for their involvement in the tunnel melee against Michigan players on Oct. 29

—Spartan players Khary Crump is  being charged with felonious assault, Jacoby Windon assault & battery, and five others with aggravated assault.

Neal Brown (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)

From CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd: Potential future openings

West Virginia: In year four, Neal Brown is headed for his worst season with the Mountaineers — 4-8 if they lose too Oklahoma State. Does the administration even wait to hire a new athletic director?

Navy: It will seemingly be Ken Niumatalolo’s call after 16 seasons. The Midshipmen haven’t had a winning campaign since 2019.

New Mexico: Danny Gonzales is in the middle of his worst season with the Lobos (2-9, 7-23 overall).

Texas State: Jake Spavital, Johnny Manziel’s former offensive coordinator, is 13-34 in year No.4.

Texas A&M: No, not Jimbo Fisher. But he’ll most likely be convinced to hire a play-calling offensive coordinator.

Last week we were 0-3 picking games against the point spread, bringing the season total to 17-21-2. (For entertainment purposes only). Our picks for week 12 are as follows:

Michigan +7.5 at Ohio State
This just seems like too many points to give to the Wolverines who could realistically win this game outright. Take the Wolverines and the 7.5 points.

Louisville +3.5 at Kentucky
The Cardinals have been playing better as of late than the slumping Wildcats. Take Louisville and the 3.5 points.

Oregon State #3 vs Oregon
Take the home team and the points in this great rivalry game with both teams having good seasons.

As is tradition, a thread on the Egg Bowl, which is the dirtiest, ugliest, most awesome rivalry I’ve ever been around.

It is rooted in posturing, pettiness & espionage.

It is the type of series that makes college football both unique and better than any other sport.

Michigan State gave a $100,000 bonus to Mel Tucker meant to be spread among him, assistant coaches, and admins.

Tuck kept it all.

“Mel Tucker’s contract stipulates he and his staff can share a six-figure bonus. Instead, Tucker received the entire $100,000.”
